The battle is heating up between dueling Snow White adaptations!

“The concept of dueling movies is a time-honored tradition,” says Hollywood.com box-office tracker Paul Dergarabedian, citing examples such as Dante’s Peak vs. Volcano and Tombstone vs. Wyatt Earp. “No one wants to have another film in the running with the same scenario. Once the first one comes out, it is hard to convince audiences to go again. In their mind, it’s the same movie.”

Paramount Pictures has acquired the rights to the first in Pamela Sargent’s young adult series, Earthseed. Melissa Rosenberg, the writer behind all of the Twilight screenplays, will create the script and produce it through Tall Girls Productions. The trilogy includes books Farseed and Seed Seeker.

Like The Hunger Games– Lionsgate’s new franchise –Earthseed is set in a dystopian future.

In this one, a group of teens has been born from the genetic bank of a spaceship and have no traditional parents.

“Ever since I was a kid, it’s been a goal of mine to see Earthseed get to the screen in an awesome way,” Paramount Pictures Film Group president Adam Goodman said in a statement. “To have Melissa Rosenberg and her Tall Girls company writing and producing this material is truly a dream.”

Hailee Steinfeld is reported to be attached to a spec script of classic fairy tale Sleeping Beauty.

The script, by development executive-turned-screenwriter Lindsay Devlin, would retell the classic story entirely from Princess Aurora’s point of view. That is, instead of Aurora merely drifting into a deep coma and waiting for true love’s kiss to break the spell, she’ll now enter a hazardous “dream world” from which she must try to escape. The spec script is currently being shopped around every major Hollywood studio.

FilmDistrict will release The Rum Diary, the Johnny Depp movie based on an early Hunter S. Thompson novel, and release it Oct. 28, 2011, the company announced at Cinemacon in Las Vegas today.

The movie is written and directed by Bruce Robinson (Withnail and I) and also stars Aaron Eckhart, Amber Heard, Michael Rispoli, Richard Jenkins and Giovanni Ribisi.

In The Rum Diary, Depp’s character moves from New York to Puerto Rico, where he becomes entangled with an American woman (Heard) and her fiancee (Eckhart), a shady developer.

Walt Disney Studios has acquired the rights to Agatha Christie’s most popular character, the elderly Miss Jane Marple. The studio plans to bring her to the screen as a woman in her 30s or 40s.

The character of Miss Marple originates in Christie’s short story collection The Thirteen Problems and spans a dozen novels.

Mark Frost, writer of the Fantastic Four movies, will pen the screenplay.

Though the two-film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel The Hobbit has been fraught with delays and difficulties, Warner Bros. has announced that production has finally started.  There were concerns thatThe Hobbit would leave New Zealand due to a labor strike, but the 3D movies will indeed be shot consecutively against the familiar backdrops from The Lord of the Rings.

Ian McKellen will reprise his role as Gandalf the Grey, Cate Blanchett will return as Galadriel, Andy Serkis will once again don the mocap suit to play Gollum and Elijah Wood will briefly appear as Frodo.

The Hobbit is set for release in 3D in December 2012 and December 2013.
