With the recent release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, focus is starting to shift to the sequel – The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes. The cast are in training and the film is due to start filming in September. Given this knowledge, fans are starting to speculate about what scenes will make it into City of Ashes, hoping that their favorite scenes from the book will make it onscreen.
So, here are the top 5 scenes we hope make it into the movie for The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes!
[warning: This contains spoilers from the City of Bones movie, and from the other books in the Mortal Instruments series]
1. Seelie Court scene
Jace receives an offer from the Queen of the Seelie Court of the Faeries, where she invites them to her court. Jace goes with Clary, Isabelle and Simon. They try to convince the Queen to help them defeat Valentine, while the Queen says she is still not sure and also mentions how their court knows deep secrets, revealing her knowledge of Jace and Clary being the subjects their father (Valentine)’s experiments that were brought to life. The group decides to leave but their plan is ruined when Clary is tricked into consuming faery food, and becomes trapped in the court – only allowed to leave by kissing ‘whom she most desires’. At first Simon kisses her, thinking the wanted kiss might be his but the kiss does not free Clary. Isabelle suggests that the kiss might be from Jace. Though being reluctant because Clary is Jace’s sister, Jace kisses Clary. The kiss suddenly becomes passionate, and Clary is freed – which proved that Jace’s kiss is the one she most desired. This upsets Simon, who storms off after they return to their realm.
2. Simon’s transformation
Raphael shows up at the Institute with Simon who is on the verge of death, explaining that the vampire blood Simon consumed at hotel dumort is ravaging his body and to save him, he must become a vampire. In the City of Bones movie, Simon does not turn into a rat and is not shown to have consumed vampire blood, but Clary notices a bite mark on his neck when he is recovering from the events at hotel dumort. This change shouldn’t really hinder the transformation storyline, as for a human to be fully turned into a vampire, one must drink Vampire blood or be bitten by other vampires. Upon being bitten, they will ‘die’ and must be buried, then dig themselves out of their grave and will then be reborn as a vampire. If no one is there to help them dig out of their grave or if they are unable to, they stay like that, trapped like rats under the earth, starving underground. If they are not buried, they will stay in the state of transition, dead but not quite dead; never waking. Upon learning this knowledge, the group bury Simon, help him dig his way out of his grave, and Simon is reborn.
3. Silent City scene
After angering Inquisitor Herondale, Jace has been imprisoned in the Silent City. While in his cell, Jace hears something attacking everyone and discovers that Valentine has killed the Silent Brothers to get the second Mortal Instrument, the Mortal Sword. Clary, Isabelle, and Alec respond to a distress call from the Silent City, only to discover the Silent Brothers have been killed. Clary frees Jace using an opening rune which simply crossed her mind. Gaining possession of the Mortal Sword is Valentine’s main goal in City of Ashes, just as getting the Mortal Cup was his mail goal in City of Bones. It’s important to keep in this scene in as the goal of the shadowhunters is to stop Valentine from getting all three Mortal Instruments. Also, this is the first time we see Clary discover her abilities to create runes.
4. Fearless rune scene
The shadowhunters discuss the powerful rune Clary used to free Jace from the Silent City, saying it was too powerful to be an ordinary opening rune. Clary explains that it was something she just thought of, but they all oppose her, saying that nobody can create runes they are created by angels. Clary is dared to make a new rune, and she ends up making a fearless rune, as suggested by Jace. They try it on Alec, whose parents and sister arrive suddenly. Alec approaches his parents and tells them he’s seeing someone who is a Downworlder. Magnus magically silences him before he says who he is dating and he’s startled, as if he just woke up. Alec claims not to remember anything, and suddenly gets so nervous and defensive when asked who he is dating, leading them to believe that the rune actually worked.
5. Inquisitor Herondale’s discovery and death
Valentine offers protection to his loved ones if Jace joins him and comes back to Idris. Jace refuses, but the next morning, Inquisitor Herondale comes to claim that Jace was with Valentine and threatens to kill Jace if Valentine does not return the Mortal Instruments. At Jace’s denial, the Inquisitor once again imprisons Jace, and plans to make a trade with Valentine: Jace’s life for the Mortal Instruments. Jace tries to tell her that it will not work, which the Inquisitor ignores, planning revenge on Valentine for killing her son. After seeing Jace’s star-shaped scar on his shoulder, she suddenly kills a demon that was attacking him. She dies during the process, leaving Jace confused at her sudden change of heart. This is important as it foreshadows the events of City of Glass, where we discover that Jace is actually the child of Stephen Herondale – The inquisitor’s son. The Inqusitor figured this out when she noticed the scar on Jace – Herondales are known to be born with star shaped marks, because their ancestor, William Herondale, had been touched by an angel.
