Andrew Garfield not only plays Spider-Man in the ‘The Amazing Spider-Man,’ but has been a huge fan of the comic character since he was a child, and is very open to all the different ways they could interpret the characters and story-lines and the changes they could make while translating them to the big screen.
Talking with Entertainment Weekly, he reveals he had a discussion with producer Matt Talmach about Peter Parker/Spider-Man’s sexuality and the idea he had about Mary Jane being a guy:
“Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking!…So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?”
Also, it seems that Garfield has really given this idea some consideration – even suggesting an actor to play the male version of Mary Jane!
“I’ve been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since The Wire. He’s so charismatic and talented. It’d be even better—we’d have interracial bisexuality!”
Here is a picture of Michael B. Jordan, just for reference:
It appears he must have suggested the idea to director Marc Webb, too. When EW mentioned the idea to Webb, the director says, “Michael B. Jordan, I know.”
‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′ is currently filming. The film is directed by Mark Webb and stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx and Felicty Jones. It is due for release on May 2nd 2014.
