I discovered The Fault in Our Stars by John Green after a girl on my ‘Hunger Games’ website Mockingjay.net, told me I looked like the Hazel in their head. I asked a couple friends about the book and they basically said, You haven’t read it yet? It’s SO GOOD! So, I went out to my nearest bookstore and got it that night. After I read it, I was obsessed. I couldn’t stop thinking about it! I’ve always had a collection of favorite books, not a singular favorite. However, after I read it, it shot straight to the top of my list. There’s just something about the story and the characters that is so real, and makes you think!
I’m new to acting, but I was desperate to somehow do something creative involving the story because of how much I love it. So, I introduced the book to my friend John Lyde, the director over at Mainstay Productions. He read it and loved it, so I wrote a few scripts for possible short film ideas, and we eventually settled on pretty much the most dramatic scene in the entire book…the gas station malfunctioning G-Tube scene. Most scenes involve at least a little bit of comedy in the novel, but not this one! John is a fantastic director and cinematographer…just check out the way he shot the film.
The novel is so near and dear to my heart I was really afraid to play Hazel, but I figured I’d take a leap of faith. I absolutely loved working with James Gaisford, who plays Augustus, on the film. He’s amazing! The whole crew was so incredibly talented as well, it was just an all-around great experience. I hope you enjoy the short!
