If you could go back, advice before it all started?
Start drinking vodka instead of beer! Try to get a six pack as early as possible! [Chuckles] Not really actually, it’s great to experience it. Massive surprises. Like, we went to Germany and just stood in the middle of a completely full Olympic stadium and just stood there! It’s just insanity.
The tagline is ‘Forever,’ what does that mean for you?
Death…and hope?
Were you sad to let him go?
Very very strange. Same frustration, same way through, it’s a strange part. On one part, a lot of the audience project their idea of him onto him, but my own instinct is to find the infallibility and weaknesses. So you’re trying to play both things at the same time, and playing this “perfect” specimen, but what is that? So you’re trying to play an archetype and a character at the same time. I just felt really frustrated…and then it ended.
Worst part about playing Edward?
The worst part would probably be playing a role where you can’t get hurt and you can’t die. There are too many possibilities if you can’t die, since I normally play a human…and there’s always that [death].
In fifteen years?
I can’t really be afraid of being type-cast since that’s not up to you. I don’t know how long this is going to last for, it’s been five years, imagine if they all had the same tenacity in 15 years?! I don’t know where I’ll be though, who knows.
Moment to re-live?
The first movie was fun. Everyone didn’t really know what was going to happen with the movie but there was a good energy, people wanted it to be something special. It felt like a big deal at the time, and it was exciting, the first one. Plus, the whole year afterwards was an exciting year!
Maintaining success as you go forward in your career?
I don’t know! I think, if I could get any more control over my public image, that would be nice. I’m not worried though, it’s impossible, nobody can do that apart from Denzel Washington! Yeah. It’s like, I don’t really it’s a strange place where the film industry is at. You could just play superhero after superhero, but that seems to be the only guaranteed big money thing. It’s not that satisfying getting monetary success, but you can do what you want with that recognition. There really is no guarantee, you can be successful and still not get to work with directors you want to work with.
In some ways, are you glad it’s over?
Some ways. As soon as you start calling a film a ‘franchise,’ it’s a Subway, a Burger King, not a movie. As an actor in it, it’s scary. You really feel like you have no control. It’s a huge juggernaut! Especially when it becomes a part of the cultural landscape, you get trapped. You get scared of changing. Which is the worst thing to happen, as an artist.
Are you as famous in England as in America?
I get a lot more abuse in England. It came slower there, I used to be able to walk around but now it’s similar as here in the U.S.
You really were a natural stepping into the father role!
I really love working with kids and animals! It makes you feel like you’re not acting. As soon as you have someone there who is providing something to react to. Especially, working with a baby. Put a dog in a scene, and everyone will automatically be better! If they’re not better, shoot the dog.
New vampires you like?
I love Benjamin, and Rami who plays him. He’s such a good actor. It’s great seeing these actors who are so passionate about it and know it’s a big deal: Like, I have 5 lines, I’m going to own them!
Taylor said he doesn’t remember meeting you! What was it like meeting Kristen and Taylor for the first time?
I don’t remember meeting Taylor either! I met Kristen at the audition. I’m still just trying to come to terms with acknowledging being an actor at all, I remember looking at Dan, Rupert, and Emma when I worked on Harry Potter and being like THOSE guys are actors. I was star struck by those guys! Plus, Kristen even though I’d only seen her in a few things. It’s funny to see them humanized. I was only with Dan, Rupert, and Emma for a few months and I still see them as massively famous. To see people retain their sanity as much as possible, I’ve seen people with a minor amount of fame lose their minds completely. AFter a casting announcement, let alone after everything.
