Hey everyone! I wanted to do a fan casting for the amazing novel (my current favorite) ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ by John Green. Although personally I believe that the film’s cast should be mainly unknowns, the online public of nerdfighteria has sounded off with plenty of ideas from our existing pool of established talent. The film is currently in pre-production at Fox, being produced by Wyck Godfrey, and has a completed script by the talented Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber. They were behind the fantastic script of (500) Days of Summer!
Hazel Grace Lancaster
I feel like Hazel is the role that should definitely go to an unknown actress. There’s just something about her character that is so special – if a famous face is put into her shoes, I don’t think it would work as well as someone fresh that can really own her personality. Personally I feel like she should be sort of like a young Carey Mulligan! Anyways, here are some of the most talked-about favorites in the pool of celebrities.
Sami Gayle

Sami Gayle, fresh from her breakout role in Detachment starring Adrien Brody, and star of Blue Bloods is someone fans have latched onto tightly for the for the role of Hazel. Although it’s probably partially due to her perfect haircut, she definitely has that look. Plus, she could live up to the “mid-2000′s Natalie Portman” comparison! Her performance in Detachment was brilliant, but her character was very different from Hazel. However, she’s an actress, so playing different characters is her job, and she definitely had to deal with a lot of complicated subject matter in Detachment. I wouldn’t count her out.

Taissa Farmiga

Taking into account the fact that hair can be cut, fans have also loved the idea of Taissa Farmiga as Hazel. I completely agree with this and love Taissa – she was great in American Horror Story. She proved she can play quiet yet bubbly types, and characters that involve lots of angst. She can cry like a pro – her deep, emotional scenes are fantastic and believable. Also she’s beautiful in a less obvious way, like I imagined Hazel to look.

Augustus Waters
Augustus is a 17 year old osteosarcoma survivor (it’s in remission, but took his leg), who loves video games, and used to be a fantastic basketball player before he got sick. He is a big believer in metaphor, and uses them whenever he can – because of this he has a unique, quirky, yet poetic way of speaking while still being a believable teenager.
Jack Quaid

Okay, hear me out on this. I know this is totally out of left field and not really a fan favorite…just my favorite! Maybe I just see it since I run a site about The Hunger Games and have seen interviews, etc. with Jack, and he just seems so Augustus to me. He has that quirky, ridiculousness yet attractiveness – and plus, he’s a good actor. (Just go watch the short film Sitting Babies and you’ll see what I mean! Beware though, put those headphones in, there’s some profanity.) He’s also really tall – believable basketball player? I think yes! Moving up from the small part of Marvel in ‘The Hunger Games,’ this would be a great for his career as well.

Grant Gustin

This is sort of odd considering he plays an evil character on Glee, but for some reason he looks very similar to the Augustus in my head! Am I crazy or do any of you guys see it? Plus, basketball player material? He’s 6’2″! Perfect. I’m not very familiar with Glee though, so I don’t know if his acting chops are up to the task. However, I don’t think we should rule him out just because his character in that show is a bad person – remember, it’s all about the acting!

ISAAC
There aren’t actually many favorites out there for Isaac, people tend to focus on the two main characters! I still have a couple ideas for him – it will be such a great role for any actor, an established or non-established one. I don’t think you can read the novel without falling in love with him, and the audience will have to believe and feel for the actor playing him in the film in order for the sub-plot to work.
Evan Peters

For some reason he’s the closest actor to my mental idea of Isaac, and yes, I am sort of obsessed with American Horror Story. I feel like Evan could play the intense and soft parts of Isaac’s character – he certainly proved that on the show! He’s a very versatile actor, if you’ve seen him in ‘Kick-Ass’ or his 2004 performance in ‘Sleepover’ – he can go from hilarious to romantic to deep to insane! It would be cool to see him tackle a role like this with such a complex physical aspect – a great challenge for him. I think he would pull it off.

Callan McAuliffe

Callan is a strong actor that most recently played a young Leonardo DiCaprio in the upcoming adaptation of ‘The Great Gatsby.’ That there says something about his talent! I think he has the ability to be a fantastic Isaac, and he fits the description perfectly. He also is ‘softer’ than Evan in a way, and younger as well. Much closer to Isaac’s real age. What do you all think?

What do you think?
Anyways, in closing, as if I didn’t say it enough…I hope that the roles of Hazel and Augustus go to unknowns! That’s just my personal opinion. What do you think? Who do you think should play Isaac, Hazel, and Augustus? Do you think an open casting call for this film would be a good idea or should they stick to more experienced performers?
