Marlene King Rewrote ‘Mortal Instruments’ Script – Original Left Out Magnus and Key Plot Points

Interesting news has been released via TheFabLife today regarding the Mortal Instruments movie. The two leads were chosen around six months ago — Lily Collins as Clary, and Jamie Campbell Bower as Jace. So why haven’t we gotten any more casting news? Turns out there have been major script issues! Marlene King, screenwriter of the hit TV show Pretty Little Liars, was brought on for rewrites, and the script is awaiting approval from the studio. The original script was deemed ‘not close enough to the book.’

In the original script, the pivotal character later in the series, Magnus, was left out entirely. The warlock is important because he becomes the boyfriend of another central character, Alec. Cassandra Clare, author of the series, adds, “I feel like the whole twist with Jace and Clary and their relationship was really important and guides the next two books, and you can’t really take it out. It’s so taboo at the same time, but they’re just going with it. That’s what makes these books.” What would you have thought if they had left out Magnus? Are you happy with Lily and Jamie as Clary and Jace?

Haven’t read the books so I am up for whoever they choose for the characters as long as they can act. Glad to see they are trying to remain as faithful to the book as possible even though I haven’t read it xD.

I think it’s great that they do a new scrpit because I like Magnus.. But when I first heard that Jamie Campbell was going to play Jace I was totally heartbroken! I like Campbell as an actor but I don’t see him as Jace at all.. Sorry Jamie

If they had left out Magnus, I would cry. As for Jamie and Lily, I have high hopes, but since I haven’t seen either of them in much of anything, I can’t really judge.

I figured they would want to remove the ‘twist’ in Jace & Clary’s relationship but it’s pretty important. And MAGNUS? Really, how would that have worked with Alec and everything. I’m glad they had it re-written. That definitely would have been too much change. As for casting, I’ve always said we have to watch before we judge. However, I did like JCB in Sweeney Todd.

It seems they wanted to remove the controversial issues, you know, the ones that MAKE the book so great. I am glad they are rewriting it.& after seeing the trailer for Lillys new Snow White flick, I realy do not want her as Clary; although she is pretty, acting is not her forte. And Jamie is not strong and handsome enough to be Jace. dissapointed :(

I’ve never thought about what putting Magnus in the movie really means later on. That he and Alec are going to start dating later on would worry the films producers. They better keep Magnus though and stick close to the book. I feel this movie will bring mainly fans of the books and removing Magnus is really a downer.

Umm I hope this flops, or at least that brings enough attention to Claire’s plagiarism.

They definitely need Magnus– I would be heartbroken if he was left out. He’s just plain awesome. Although I was wary of Lily and Jamie as the two main characters at first, I’m liking them more and more as time goes on. I really hope they do a good job on this movie! It’s one of my fav books.

I would be disappointed if they leave Magnus.I’d rather they take their time revising it. He’s a major character afterall. A sparkling Magnus is a must see :) ) I do hope they hurry with the casting.

In my opinion, they didn’t want to put Magnus and the twist with Jace and Clary in the script because they are polemical/controversial themes.
Yes, we still live in a very conservative world!
I do hope that they will come around and put things the way it’s suppose to.

They can’t leave Magnus out. No .. Just no. So, it’s great that they make a new script! :)
And i’ve come to like Jamie & Lilly more and more over the time.

I like Lily playing Clary but Jamie as Jace… sorry, I don’t see it working well…
As for the whole Magnus thing: What were they thinking?!?!?! Seriously, who would left Magnus out?!
Thanks goodness they are changing it :)

I would have been so so sooooo pissed if they left about the relationship of Clary and Jace. That alone is like half the whole story, and mad about Magnus, he just much as a needed character as they rest. The books are admired all over the world for JUST HOW IT IS. Hearing the news of it becoming a movie was a bonus to us all. But I would totally have started a boycott on the movie if they thought removing some of the KEY PARTS to the book was fine. Just because more conserved people with a less open mind to their approach in life gives no rightful reason to offend the rest of us who love the books for what is it. We are the fans they are the on-lookers.

I like the one comment about Clare’s plagiarism. It seems nobody really brings that up anymore. I’ve read all four of the MI books that are out so far, but haven’t read the Clockwork series, and I can honestly say that while her writing is OK, the plagiarism thing really bugs me. Also, someone told me that she basically just tweaked her HP fanfic to turn Draco into Jace, and Ginny into Clary, and now I can’t get that out of my head, because it seems so PAINFULLY obvious.

I would have been FURIOUS, had they left out Magnus. I mean, its MAGNUS BANE! In my opinion, Magnus makes the entire book, and what would have happened to Malec?! Seriously starting to get worried that this movie will ruin the books :(

I am glad that they have put magnus back in and jamie is a good actor so i like him for the choice but i am not sure of lily as clary :L

  22. Marlena Damico January 17, 2012 at 3:59 pm -

Alright I’m going to be honest…Jamie Campbell Bower does not seem like he has the confidence and presence as Jace does… and what the heck? leave magnus out?!?!?! hes soooo huge throughout the following 3 books! I wanted adam lambert to be magnus bt dubs

  23. Deja March 8, 2012 at 8:17 pm -

I wish they would have casted soeine else as Jace. I just don’t picture Jamieas Jace.

  24. IM4life March 23, 2012 at 12:32 am -

Umm…WHY WOULD THEY EVEN THINK ABOUT LEAVING THESE KEY FACTORS OF THE BOOK OUT? I LOVE these books. Its my favorite book series, and has been for a LONG, LONG, time. I love them more than Twilight and Hunger Games. So why the HELL are they trying to screw it up? When I forst read the books I wanted everyone to know its glory. And know all the people who havent read the books are going to see it in the movie. I would hate it if it git presented to the public the WRONG way! who cares if alec and Magnus are gay?!??? Magnus is one of my FAVORITE characters! And that whole thing about leaving out the Jace and Clary related problem, is just plain stupid. I actually hope the movie doesnt blow up like the Hunger Games or Twilight because I know stupid little girls who havent read the books are gonna obsess over it for all the wrong reasons. There gonna think they know all about the story and characters when really, they have no clue the TRUE glory of these books. But they are rewritting the script so there still is hope. Even then, id be pissed that once the movie comes out, THATS when girls wanna get hooked. As for the cast so far, I cant really judge because I havent really seen much work for Lily. And Jamie I liked in Sweeney Todd, and he’s not really ugly, but in my mind I see a VERY attractive Jace and I feel they could have casted someone better looks wise, but I cant judge on his acting. For all I know he can gain muscle and blow me away as Jace…we will see. THEY NEED TO HURRY UP AND CAST EVERYONE! I dont like that they are reciving input from Lily for casting the other characters. I know that her opinion probably isnt really weighted but I still dont think she has the greatest grasp of what the people casted need to succeed and be like in order to play a certain role. Being she stated that she didnt read the books until she was considered for the part of Clary, she a fan enough of the books to understand the characters. This was long… sorry. I REALLY hope Im not the only one who feels this way! :)

I think Jamie is a decent actor, but he is to delicate to play are sarcastic and gruff warrior like Jace. I think Lilly will do a great job, but until I see her with red hair (which she better have) I can’t fully see her as Clary.

  26. LauraLeigh May 2, 2012 at 11:46 am -

I love Jamie as Jace I think he totally fits the lean muscle description of Jace plus Jamie is FINE!! However, Lillly as Clary seems a little weird to me but I think she can act the part … hopefully they dye her hair red though! Really I just hope this movie gets made because it could make an AWESOME movie!!
