Callan McAuliffe Talks ‘I Am Number Four’ & His Literary Dream Role

‘I Am Number Four’ Hits Theaters Tomorrow! (+ Contest Info Below)

1. It must have been a whirlwind for you these past few years. Flipped was your first feature film, and now you’re in ‘I Am Number Four,’ a blockbuster that will be in theaters everywhere. Let us know about the moment you felt that feeling of: ‘Wow, I’ve made it!’
That moment never really happened to me to be entirely honest. However, there is always the realization that so many people strive to do what I’m doing, and I’m one of the lucky ones that has been privileged enough to make it.

2. Did the director give you a lot of free reign while preparing your character, Sam; or were there specifics you had to stick to? What character points did you feel were most important about him and why?
It was all quite spontaneous actually. I read the script for the first time on the plane trip to Pittsburgh, and had a conversation with DJ about where we wanted to take the character. He’d tell me if something was a great idea, or if it was terrible.

3. ‘Flipped’ and ’I Am Number Four’ were both based on (very different) books. Have you read them, and if so, which one was your favorite?
Neither book is my type of novel, but I thoroughly enjoyed them. My favourite of the two – believe it or not – was Flipped.

4. Why do you think book adaptations always end up being the crazy-huge fan favorite franchises? (Harry Potter, Twilight..etc.)
It’s probably because the book adaptions already have a fan-base that have always wanted to see a film made of their book.

5. Did you feel the pressure when you were the lead in your first feature film, Flipped? Was it easier for your second film ‘I Am Number Four,’ or did the high-profile nature of it make it more nerve-wracking?
It’s never really nerve-wracking on film projects for me, everyone is always very cooperative and friendly, and are all trying to reach the same goal.

6. If you could play any character in the adaptation of any book, which would you pick and why?
I’d love to play someone like “Brian” from the novel “Hatchet”. That role, unlike the ones I’ve done, would require “acting.” It’s also a brilliant novel.

7. What would be your ultimate dream role?
Brian from Hatchet!

8. I heard you were a Hunger Games fan! We are fans as well. What do you think makes those books so amazingly awesome?
The thing that makes those books so amazingly awesome is the atmosphere that Collins creates. The writing quality is fantastic, and really draws you into the world she created.

9. The second book in ‘The Lorien Legacies’ has not yet been released. What would you love to happen in the next book?
I want Sam to become extremely bad-ass, and kill a bunch of aliens.

10. How was the transition for you, going from living in Australia as a normal teen, to living in Los Angeles as an actor?
It was interesting, to say the least. It’s a very different atmosphere over here to what it is back in Australia. Regardless, it has been a tough, but amazing journey.

11. What’s your favorite / least part about being an actor? What would you plan on doing as a career if you weren’t acting?
My favourite part is without a doubt acting on set with all of the fantastic people. My least favourite part, however, is definitely the audition process, and the publicity process. If I wasn’t an actor, I would definitely have done something to do with Biology. I’m a wildlife fanatic!

12. Your previous films haven’t been very action-packed, what was it like being in an action-packed Michael Bay-produced (full of EXPLOSIONS!) film? Did you do your own stunts in I Am Number 4?
My character was a little less adept at fighting than some of the other characters, but I did get to shoot some people! Being a 15 year old Australian guy at the time of shooting, an action film like this was a dream come true.

13. Can you let us know a fun story from the set of I Am Number Four?
There was a scene when we had to escape a giant flying-bat-monster-creature-thing while it chases us across a football field. I tripped during this scene and rolled a few times. After we got a successful take, DJ played me falling over in slow motion on the playback monitors for everyone to see!

14. What’s next for you? Can you give us any hints to your upcoming projects?
Unfortunately I can’t say much, but there are a few projects I’m attached to at the moment. 2011 should be an interesting year!

Would you like to win a DVD copy of ‘Flipped,’ Callan’s first feature film?

All you have to do to enter is ‘like’ us on on Facebook, then just comment here, with your true name in the field provided. (That way we can check! Last initial only is perfectly fine.) I can’t believe that you got to talk to Callan via email! And, in reply to you answering my ask (on tumblr), I seriously cannot believed you chickened out on asking him about Peeta! You interview people, Kimmy, you’re not suppoused to freak. Haha.

  36. Gloria Choi February 18, 2011 at 1:38 pm -

I really liked Callan in Flipped..he portrayed how annoyed Bryce was and how his character changed and matured. I think he would make ann excellent Peeta!

  37. Cynara Inman February 18, 2011 at 2:15 pm -

At first I didn’t really see him as Peeta…he just seemed like a bland teen at first. xD
But after I watched a few interviews his charm won me over!
    He’s adorable!

  38. Victoria Ru. February 18, 2011 at 3:42 pm -

I haven’t seen him act yet, so I don’t know what I think about him. But, after I see him in ‘I Am Number Four’ tomorrow I will definitely have one.

  39. Maria Choi February 18, 2011 at 6:49 pm -

Flipped was one of the few movies that stuck to the book. For that, it would be an honor to win the DV. Thank you!

Flipped was a cute movie. I enjoyed his character in I Am Number Four – book and film. I think he’d be a good Peeta, but that’s just my opinion. I’d love to see him and Hailee Steinfeld as Peeta and Katniss, respectively.

  50. Alisa C March 19, 2011 at 5:22 am -

I haven’t seen Flipped, but hear it is great and keep meaning to hire it. I did go and see I Am Number Four, and being from Australia, I didn’t even know he was Australian, and I’m kind of ashamed. Nonetheless, he was very good in I Am Number Four, and I look forward to seeing other work he does in the future :)
