Entertainment critic Patrick Goldstein raved over upcoming film “Flipped” in a recent issue of the Los Angeles Times. Calling the cast “stellar”, Goldstein states that the film is as much for adults as for kids.
Director Rob Reiner discovered the story while reading with his grade-age son for school. At his son’s suggestion, Reiner investigated the possibility of adapting “Flipped” for the big screen. The book was, at the time, optioned to Kelly Gonda, complete with a screenplay by Nora Ephron (who wrote the screenplay to Reiner’s “When Harry Met Sally“). When Gonda left the movie business, Reiner snapped up the rights and changed the setting from present-day to the 1950s.
Early screenings reveal that young and elder audiences agree on the film’s merit. Young audiences appreciate the youthful story, while older audiences are inspired to nostalgia. The movie even reminds Reiner of his first love—and the kiss that went awry. The innocence of the ‘50s and the important values emphasized in the story combine to create an engaging and emotionally stirring film.
